Davorin Jenko (1835 – 1914)

Poznati kompozitor i dirigent, rođen je 1835. u Dvorju kod Kranja, a umro 1914. u Ljubljani (Slovenija). Od 1859 do 1862. bio je horovođa “Slovenačkog pevačkog društva” u Beču. U to vreme komponovao je popularne slovenačke horove, među kojima i “Naprej zastava slave” koja je kasnije korišćena kao slovenačka himna. Svoj rad nastavlja kao horovođa “Srpskog crkvenog pevačkog društva” u Pančevu i “Beogradskog pevačkog društva“, komponujući za horove na srpsku patriotsku poeziju. Postavši dirigent Narodnog pozorišta stvara muziku za više od 80 pozorišnih komada (“Đido”, “Seoska lola”, “Potera”, “Vračara”, “Pribislav i Božana”, “Marko kazuje na kome je carstvo” sa završnim horom “Bože pravde” koji se koristi kao srpska nacionalna himna) i nekoliko koncertnih uvertira (“Kosovo”, “Milan”, “Srpkinja”, “Aleksandar”). Jedan je od prvih romantičara u slovenačkoj muzici i, iako Slovenac, jedan od najznačajnijih predstavnika muzike romantizma u Srbiji. Ovde daje pečat čitavom jednom razdoblju. Usavršava klasičan srpski “komad sa pevanjem”, podiže instrumentalnu muziku na viši umetnički nivo, stvara prvu srpsku operetu (“Vračara” ili “Baba Hrka”, praizvedena 1882.) i udara temelje razvoju srpske opere.

Composer and conductor, was born in 1835 in Kranj (Slovenia), and died in 1914 in Ljubljana (Slovenia). From 1859-1862 he was a choirmaster of “Slovenian Singing Society” in Vienna. At this time has composed a number of popular choir pieces, among them “Naprej zastava slave” which was used as the Slovenian national anthem. Hi continues as a choirmaster of “Serbian Church Singing Society” in Panchevo and “First Belgrade Singing Society“, where he composed various patriotic poems. After becoming a leading conductor in National Theatre, Jenko composed some of his most important works, like the music for more then 80 stage pieces, among them songs for the theater play “Marko names the Emperor”, with the final choir “God of Justice” and it’s immense popularity with the audiences prompted her adoption as the Serbian national anthem), as well as various concert overtures, intended as an individual concert pieces. He was among the first and most distinguished romantic composers, both in Slovenia and Serbia. Jenko created musical colours and effects that influenced most later composers. He improved so-called “play with singing”, an original form in Serbian music, and creates the very first Serbian operetta (“The Witches” or “Baba Hrka”, in1882) which is a fundamental for developing Serbian opera.
